PiYo is a workout that combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility advantages of yoga. And then, the moments are sped up to deliver a true fat-burning, low-impact workout that leaves your body looking long, lean, and incredibly defined.  With no jumping, no weights, and no damage to your body.

Now sometimes I say Piyo and other I will say Piyo Live, and there is a difference.

Piyo is the workout that was created by Charlene Johnson and then bought and distributed by Beachbody, a company that also brought us workouts such as Insanity and P90X.   Piyo isn’t like standard Pilates and Yoga classes that make you hold long, intense poses, or lead you through dozens of repetitive core focused movements. Charlene created Piyo because having been recommended going to yoga following an injury, she found traditional classes too slow for her, she was used to training and wanted to move. Piyo speeds everything up by introducing you to dynamic, flowing sequences that can burn serious calories at the same time as they lengthen and tone your muscles and increase your flexibility.

Piyo Live is a real time class that you can attend with a certified Piyo Live instructor, like Olivia. They will lead you through a Piyo workout set to great music and every so often they receive new choreography from Beachbody Live to be able to refresh the routines their classes follow.

Whilst Piyo is described as using moves from Yoga and Pilates, it is not a zen experience and there is no time for meditation. For a start, there are burpees (occasionally) and the constant movement ensures that the class delivers a true fat-burning experience. With every action-packed Piyo Live session with Olivia as your instructor, you can define your whole body whilst missing out on  the aches and pains that can come along with high-impact workouts. No matter your age, no matter your body type, Piyo will help give you visible results.

Benefits that you will gain from taking PIYO LIVE classes on a regular basis:

Burns excess fat

With LivFit you are constantly moving during a PIYO Live whole class; for example: sun salutations, lunges, tricep pushups, and squats. This may sound intimidating but each section walked through before the music starts and all moves can be modified so anyone can participate.  We burn anywhere between 250 to 400 calories in the 45 minute class, not to mention the calorie burn that continues afterwards.

Helps to tone your body

PIYO Live is taught in sections, each of which focuses on different muscle groups and functions within the body.  The best bit is that we do this without using any extra equipment: no weights, no stretch bands, and no steps. The only thing that we need is a mat for comfort.

Reduces stress on the body

PIYO is super friendly on knees, ankles and feet. There are some moves that you could add a  jump to if you feel like it, but for the majority it is a very low impact workout. It is designed for people of all ages, men or women and any fitness level.

Builds your physical endurance

In PIYO Live we move a lot, we not only give our cardiovascular system a run for its money but we work out with bodyweight strengthening exercises too. The more we repeat this, the easier some moves will get. Fortunately, we can progress the moves in PIYO Live so as the body adapts, we can turn up the intensity.

Improves agility and flexibility

The dynamic movement of PIYO will stretch and elongate your muscles and also improve their functionality.

Improves balance

We may not want to hear this, but we are all getting older and nothing could be more key to our future health and self than maintaining our core stability, and in turn, our overall balance. PIYO Live is just as relevant to the 60+ age group as it is to the 16+.

Improves posture

As a nation we spend far too much time sat hunched over a computer or slouched on a sofa. PIYO Live includes moves to open the chest and stretch out the upper back, all of which helps you to stand taller.

Makes you happy

One of the biggest things I liked about PIYO was the positivity of the trainer Charlene, and that was just from a pre-recording streamed on my laptop. With LivFit this is something that is key to each class, ensuring that you feel you have achieved something and leave with a smile.
